Me & White Supremacy
I will not stay silent while our black and brown brothers and sisters are being slaughtered in the streets. I will not turn away from voicing my outrage at the enormous suffering that white supremacy causes. I will not be apathetic and thereby perpetuate the sickness of racism that denies people their human rights and even their very lives.
I know that in speaking out, I’m not always going to say or do the right thing. I’ve been steeped in white privilege for so long that my ignorance may lead me to blunder. However, I will listen to the voices of people of color and learn how I can take action at whatever level is possible to help eliminate this virus that infiltrates every aspect of our collective and individual lives.
Moreover, I will cease to only blame racists “out there” and continue to question my own assumptions and prejudices so that I will not perpetuate harm. And as I do the inner work of uprooting the effects of white supremacy on me, I will show up and work for justice in my community and the nation. When I know better, I will do better.
“At this time in history, more than ever before, people are asking what they can do to help dismantle white supremacy and where to begin: begin within. Begin with YOU and white supremacy.” - Layla F. Saad
