Desire

Desire, I have maligned you
for too long.
I know you have always been close,
behind my
urgent list of tasks.
Often, I’d hear you
singing forlornly
when the moon was high
and the house was quiet.
I’d tried hard to deny
your siren’s call.
Each note, a wild summon
that threatened to shake
my world in ways
I could not tolerate.
Your persistent tune
filled me with dread.
There was no space in
my life for you.
I had babies to raise,
homes to care for,
money to make.
Some form of order
to align with.
Your promises of sweetness
would surely
make living messy.
Instead, I made you an outcast
in my existence.
I starved you until your
bones pierced your flesh.
I left you for decades
to rot in oblivion.
Perhaps I had been
properly enculturated
to think of you as dangerous?
I’d assumed you’d
lead me toward debauchery
and ruin.
As if, once I head your call,
I’d sell my children.
Even my beloved Eastern
teachings have told me
that craving, yearning,
and attachment are the
kiss of death to my
spiritual journey, to peace.
Now, with eyes open,
I say to all this,
“LIES! LIES! LIES!”
Desire is the enlivening force
of the universe!
It is the energy that forms stars,
creates planets.
Every proton and neutron is made
through this creative power.
Everything manifest contains
the seed of desire.
The acorn an oak,
the heart cell a beating heart.
You and I are gifted with
the desire to create:
art, children, memories, change.
Perhaps, just to glorify in
our ability to do so.
IT IS TIME TO ALLOW
THE MESSINESS OF DESIRE
ITS RIGHTFUL DUE AS
THE FORCE THAT
CREATES WORLDS.
Do we need any other
reason than this?
Desire is God watching
herself create.
Let her in.
Open the gate to the
ecstasy she offers.
Peel away the veil and
know that You are
the creator being created.
Step into your desire,
your passion,
your deepest creative
leanings.
Do not push the call,
the dance,
the song,
the adventure away.
Nourish desire at
your breast.
Infuse it with your love.
Express it with your
whole being.
Do so, as if your very
life depends on it.
As if the survival of the
species depends on it.
And it does.
