I understand why some of you are calling for peace in the midst of the current situation. However, I would ask you to consider the effect of calling for peace without first calling for justice.
For those of us who are white, calling for peace without working for justice in our communities or without uprooting the toxic weeds of white privilege within our own psyches or families doesn’t fill our hearts with more “love and light.” Instead, it just shows how privileged we are.
Calling for peace without calling for justice is an example of spiritual bypassing. Of course most of us want peace (most of all, people of color) but unless we make concrete changes to create a just future for all peoples, peace cannot prevail.
No justice, no peace.
